When Saxton had grown, he followed in his father’s footsteps: he went to medical school, graduating from the University of California in 1899.
He set up practice in Watsonville, a small city south of San Francisco. He married a medical school classmate, Dr. Emma Wightman. They had four children.
In 1912, he moved his practice to San Francisco, where be became a teacher of Surgery at the UCSF Medical School.
In the course of his practice, in 1912 Dr. Pope met Ishi, a Yahi Indian who had wandered, starving, into Oroville, California the year before. Dr Pope treated Ishi for his “Illnesses of civilization,” but also learned the art of bowhunting from him.
Ishi died in 1916. Dr Pope went on to become “The Father of Modern Bowhunting,” hunting in many places in the United States and going on safari in Africa. Dr. Pope wrote several popular books, the best-known is Hunting with the Bow and Arrow.
